Last Monday, July 7, was "Group of Seven Day" in Ontario. I went to the festivities at the Art Gallery of Ontario, which happens to be the site of the first Group of Seven exhibition in 1920. The AGO isn't normally open on Mondays, but they made an exception for this. Visitors were invited to "immerse" themselves in some 200 Group of Seven paintings, and then create their own Group of Seven inspired artwork.

In addition to providing paper and markers, the museum provided a model landscape, which seems to have been based primarily on this painting by Lawren Harris:

Here, mountains and other terrain are made from draped fabric, with a couple of potted plants to represent forests. There's also a red canoe, which seems to have wandered in from another painting.

I decided to give it a try, though I couldn't bring myself to to do it in public in real time. I worked on it after I got home and, on my second attempt, came up with this:

I admit it doesn't look much like mountains, but I think it's a pretty good representation of draped fabric and potted plants.
